Functional Yoga Workshop with Maya

Functional Yoga is a term that describes a yoga practice that relates to the way the whole body works. Google dictionary defines functional as having a special activity, purpose, or task; relating to the way in which something works or operates. And also that which is designed to be practical and useful, rather than attractive.

Therefore, every movement and posture in your practice should be based on its purpose and role in your body’s movement and not about its appearance. Functional yoga prioritizes how a pose feels and how it creates optimal wellness in the body, and not how fancy or how instagram-worthy it looks like on the outside. Function over form.

In this workshop and in my functional yoga classes, we incorporate traditional yoga postures, breathing, and mindfullness techniques, and also movements from other methods like physical therapy, primal movement, martial arts, and many more. Be prepared for the practice to look like yoga, but different. You will leave feeling stronger, and more present in your body, as this method is all about YOU, and how the movement feels in YOUR body, not about creating a perfect-looking pose. All levels are welcome, as we build from basic towards increasingly challenging movements. There will always be something that you can do. And there will always be something that challenges you.

In this workshop, we will cover the basics of what functional yoga is and is not. We will then move through a practice that includes breath awareness, warming up key muscles and joints, and explore a sequence that includes a focus on all major areas of the body: hips, shoulders, core, back, sides, etc. The practice culminates in a breath-centered, guided Savasana and meditation.
